Dry eye is the chronic lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye. The causes are dry air from air conditioning, heat, natural aging process, side effects of certain drugs, Sjogren’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and collagen vascular diseases. There are various ways in treating dry eyes. These include Lubricating Drops, Antibiotics and Drainage Plugs.
Lubricating Drops. These are over-the-counter eye drops that contain lubricating ingredients. There are also lubricating gels, inserted and dissolve over time.
Antibiotics are used for treatment when dry eye is caused by an infection. This may be applied as an eye drops/ointment or taken in pill form.
Drainage Plugs. This treatment is used if dry eyes are caused by insufficient tear production and the use of artificial tears doesn’t provide enough relief.
